Blockchain’s disruptive technology is rapidly transforming business processes from insurance to real estate. At the forefront of the change are the students, who may as well be the pioneers of tomorrow when it comes to the maturity of Blockchain. In promoting awareness, sourcing potential talents and integrating Blockchain into university electives, the University of Makati alongside NEM.IO Philippines and partners have hosted its first Blockchain seminar last month, January 10, 2019. In attendance were students, faculty and alumni members.

DynaQuest Sr. Tech Advisor and Blockchain Solutions Architect Mark Talahiban was among the IT experts that were featured in the one day seminar and workshop. The program’s main presentation outlined the following:

• An introduction to Blockchain
• The core definition of Blockchain
• How Blockchain is transforming businesses
• The many use cases of Blockchain
• How students can get started with Blockchain
• How can students and professionals learn Blockchain
• Blockchain startups in the Philippines
• Developing Blockchain under the NEM Decentralized Applications
• Opportunities in Blockchain

With Blockchain being a transformative force in technology, it creates new opportunities for students according to Mark. “Students should be aware of Blockchain’s potential and the immense opportunities in this emerging community.” In citing from experience in working and designing Blockchain systems, Mark stated that Blockchain’s development is being fast tracked with the emergence of frameworks and “As a Service” resources.

Following the Event and Workshop, the University of Makati also held a Blockchain workshop dedicated to the students on January 16, 2019. Soon, the university will start offering Blockchain as an elective course in their curriculum.

In the local scene, Blockchain as a platform for business and commerce have long since stepped out of its association with Bitcoin. With local fintech startups coming up with innovative ways to utilize and bring Blockchain into the spotlight, expect more universities and colleges to integrate Blockchain into their curriculum.
