The disruptive nature of Blockchain is going beyond business and is at the forefront of reshaping humanitarian efforts by providing an essential platform to manage identities, streamline the traceable distribution of aid and enabling direct patronage to person transactions.
When technology such as Blockchain is changing the world for the better, then we can see that a technology is a transformative platform to enable a better world.
The refugee crisis in this decade is an unprecedented scenario in terms of human migration not seen since the early days of humanity’s migration to settle across the world. This time around, the human migration is stemming from refugees seeking shelter from the socio-political violence originating from their respective countries. Despite the global coordination of international organizations such as UNICEF, Red Cross, World Food Program and other institutions, efforts to provide essential services such as food, health services and social services has been very challenging due to the sheer numbers of the refugees that are crossing from the middle-east into European territories.
Identity Matters
According to reports, a very large percentage of the refugees from Syria, Africa and other countries remain undocumented as they enter European territories or are settled for the time being in refugee camps. Even as they enter into European countries such as Germany, England, Italy, Turkey and France, local governments and their social services are still hard pressed to document migrants.
When a person is unregistered with his or her local government or community, the person’s records are non-existent and the government will find it difficult to apply social services such as healthcare. Even across developing countries in Southeast Asia, large portions of the population in the rural area lack the identity to be recognized by government records.
Identity Across Blockchain
In Myanmar, the marginalized people of the Rohingya race were subject for decades of the lack of identity from Myanmar and Bangladesh. Now, that is changing with the Rohingya project where the Rohingya people are being enrolled into a digital identity system through the medium of digital identity cards. The people of the Rohingya bloodline such as in Malaysia, Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia were the early subjects of the project. The small trial has taken steps and the end-goal is to incorporate such identities into a Blockchain identity system that will be interoperable within systems such as banking and education.
A Blockchain database is used to record individual digital identities, which can then be issued to people once they have taken a test of verification that they are genuine Rohingya.
The Rohingya Blockchain project formally recognizes the importance of identities to give access to once invisible or undocumented people in order to give them access to social programmes, legal rights, education and healthcare.
